Q&A
Why does my headset sound faint, with noise and distortion, when plugged into an OMTP port?
The "ground" and "microphone" pins are reversed between OMTP and CTIA standards. Therefore, using a CTIA headset with an OMTP port can result in such issues. The solution is to match the standards: use CTIA headsets with CTIA ports and OMTP headsets with OMTP ports. If you must connect a CTIA headset to an OMTP port or an OMTP headset to a CTIA port, try not fully inserting the headset plug to avoid these problems.
What is OTMP and CTIA?
There are currently two international standards for mobile phone headphone jacks. One is OMTP, commonly referred to as the OMTP standard, and the other is CTIA. The positions of "ground" and "microphone" are reversed between these two standards (see the diagram for reference). Most international manufacturers, including those in the U.S., Hong Kong, and other global markets, use the CTIA standard, such as iPhone headphones.
