The key difference is that soft compression relies 100% on the computer's CPU for processing, while hard compression utilizes a built-in chipset to offload processing from the CPU, improving capture performance. Desktop PCs can use software compression capture cards, while laptops typically require USB-based software compression capture devices. Standalone hardware compression recorders operate independently of a computer.
